🐜 Before the Question
This question comes from a famous experiment about learned limitations. It’s not trivia — it’s a mirror. The fleas in the jar don’t know they’re in one. Most of us don’t either.
Knowledge Check · The Flea Jar
Fleas are placed in a jar. A lid is sealed on top. The fleas, naturally, jump — and hit the lid. Over time, they learn the height. Generations pass. The behavior gets baked in.
When the lid is finally removed from the jar, what happens to the fleas?
A
They immediately leap out, finally free.
B
They keep jumping only as high as the lid used to be — even though it’s gone.
C
They stop jumping altogether and resign to the bottom.
D
The next generation jumps free, but the original ones never do.
🔮 The Deeper Layer
The flea jar isn’t about fleas. It’s about every “I can’t” you carry from a version of your life that no longer exists. The honest question isn’t “can I?” — it’s “is the lid still there, or did I just stop checking?” Most limits we accept were installed by people who aren’t around anymore, in circumstances that no longer apply.
